1. How do I buy an e-book from the Guilford Press website?

You can order Guilford e-books right here on our website. Just add the e-book of your choice to your shopping cart and proceed with the ordering process. When your order is complete, you will be prompted to download your e-book. Please note that you must have Adobe Digital Editions installed before downloading your e-book. (Please also note: Adobe Digital Editions is a different product from the more common Adobe Reader.)

Guilford e-books cannot be pre-ordered. If the product page says the e-book is "coming soon," please check back closer to the publication date.


2. How do I buy a Guilford Press e-book from another vendor?

In addition to being able to purchase Guilford e-books right here on our website, you can also purchase Guilford e-books from many online booksellers, including Amazon, Apple, Barnes & Noble, Google Play, Kobo, and eBooks.com. We are adding new resellers all the time.


3. How do I download my e-book?

4. What if I accidentally lose the page that contains the link to my e-book, before downloading?

Your confirmation e-mail includes a link to your e-book download. If you cannot find your confirmation e-mail, please check your spam folder. You may also contact ebooks@guilford.com to request a new download link.


5. I downloaded my e-book but I can't find it now.

Your e-book should automatically open in Adobe Digital Editions (ADE). Once you have closed ADE, the e-book can be found in the future by simply opening ADE and checking the Library section.

You can also locate the file in the default download directory on your computer. The default location in Windows is the 'Digital Editions' folder in 'My Documents.' In Mac OS, the default location is the 'Digital Editions' folder in 'Documents.' If you have downloaded an EPUB file, you can search for recently added files with the file extension “.epub.” PDF files have the extension “.pdf.”


6. What is Adobe Digital Editions?

Adobe Digital Editions (ADE) is a free software program used to view and manage e-books. You will need to download ADE in order to purchase and download e-books from Guilford and transfer e-books from your computer to other devices. You can use ADE to manage e-books from other sources in addition to Guilford, and to organize all of your e-books into a custom library.

Before installing ADE, please check that your system meets the ADE system requirements.


7. I'm having trouble with Adobe Digital Editions.

If you see a "resume pending tasks" or "error getting license" message while using ADE, simply click "ok" and you will be able view your e-book. If your problem concerns downloading or opening Adobe Digital Editions, please contact ADE support.


8. What e-book formats does Guilford use?

The format of an e-book is clearly listed on the product page, below the ISBN. Most of our e-books are offered in EPUB format, a widely supported, reflowable format that allows you to change the font size for easy reading. For several of our titles, for which the preservation of the exact look of the print book is important, the title is offered in PDF format, a fixed format that looks just like the printed book. If you want an e-book in PDF format and it is only available on our site in EPUB format, you can search ebooks.com, where hundreds of Guilford titles are available as PDF e-books.

9. I have a Kindle or Kindle Touch or Kindle Fire. Can I read e-books purchased directly from Guilford on this device?

No. Kindles use proprietary software, and will only display e-books purchased directly from Amazon. Hundreds of Guilford titles are available in the Kindle format through Amazon.


10. I have an iPad or iPhone. Can I read e-books purchased directly from Guilford on this device?

Yes, iPad and iPhone users can order directly from the Guilford site. You can either purchase and download your e-book on your computer, using Adobe Digital Editions, and then transfer it to your iPad/iPhone, or you can purchase and download your e-book directly on your iPad/iPhone. 11. How do I know if I can read Guilford e-books downloaded from the Guilford website on my device?

Guilford e-books can be read on any device that supports the e-book format you purchase (either EPUB or PDF; the format is clearly indicated on the product page) and that is supported by ADE. You can purchase and download your e-book directly to the device if it includes a web browser and ADE. Or, you may transfer the e-book to a supported device from a computer with ADE installed.

E-books ordered on the Guilford site are compatible with most e-readers.

  • iPad and iPhone phone users can order directly from the Guilford site. For instructions, please see our iPad/iPhone Guide.
  • Kindle users can order our e-books through Amazon. Kindles use proprietary software, and will only display e-books purchased directly from Amazon. Hundreds of Guilford titles are available in the Kindle format through Amazon.
  • Android users, please check to see if the e-reader on your device is supported by ADE.
  • Sony users can either download ADE and use it to manage your e-books, or you can use the software that came with your Sony reader. If you use your Sony software and don't download ADE, when you click on your download link at the end of the ordering process, your e-book should automatically open in your Sony software. If it doesn't, or if you have both Sony and ADE and your e-book doesn't open in the one you'd like to use, please contact our technical support. Please let us know which browser you are using and whether you have a Mac or PC.
  • Nook users can order directly from the Guilford site, using ADE to manage and transfer your e-book. You may also order on barnesandnoble.com.
  • Kobo users can order directly from the Guilford site, using ADE to manage and transfer your e-book. You may also order on kobobooks.com.

12. Can I read e-books on my Mac?

Yes, Adobe Digital Editions is available for the Mac. Currently, ADE only works on Mac OS X v10.6 or later.


13. To read an e-book on multiple devices (such as my laptop and my smartphone), do I need to purchase multiple copies?

No. It is only necessary to purchase one copy of an e-book at a time, as each e-book that you purchase can be used on up to 6 devices. ADE includes instructions for authorizing each of your devices and transferring your e-books onto them.


14. Are all Guilford titles available as e-books?

Almost all new Guilford titles are released in both print and e-book formats. We also offer an expanding list of backlist titles as e-books. See our e-books page to find a particular e-book title. Guilford e-books cannot be pre-ordered. If the product page says the e-book is "coming soon," please check back closer to the publication date. If there is a Guilford book you would like to see as an e-book that isn’t currently in that format, please contact us at ebooks@guilford.com and let us know.


15. Can I print out my e-book? To how many readers/computers can I download my e-book?

Guilford e-books come with certain restrictions (also known as DRM or Digital Rights Management) for the protection of copyrights. When you purchase and download an e-book directly from Guilford, you have the right to:

  • Download it on up to 6 devices.
  • Access the entire book with no expiration date.
  • Print up to 30 pages of text every 7 days (up to 400 pages per year).
  • Copy/paste up to 2 pages of text every 7 days.
Guilford e-books cannot be copied or "lent" due to copyright restrictions. Professors: Different usage rights apply for Free for Adoption Consideration (FFAC) and Exam copies. Visit our professor page for details.


16. As a professor, can I download an e-book for possible course adoption?

17. Do I have to pay sales tax on e-books?

Guilford charges sales tax on all orders from the states of Pennsylvania, California, and New York, as well as from Canada.


18. Can I order e-books by phone or mail?

Currently, Guilford e-books can only be ordered online.


19. Can I pay for an e-book with a check?

No; e-books can only be purchased with a credit or debit card at this time.


20. Can I purchase an e-book as a gift?

At this time, e-books cannot be sent as gifts.


21. How long does it take to download an e-book?

The download time depends on the size of the e-book you order and the speed of your internet connection. Download times generally vary between 2 seconds and 2 minutes.


22. I'm having trouble with my e-reader device.

Please contact the maker of your device.


23. What is the return policy for e-books?

We are unable to accept returns or offer refunds on completed, downloaded e-book purchases. Before completing your e-book transaction, please take care to ensure you have purchased the correct format and title and that your e-reader is compatible (remember, Kindles are not able to read our e-books). We encourage you to activate ADE and test your software and system configurations by downloading a free sample e-book before making your first purchase. If you have concerns about your purchase, please contact ebooks@guilford.com.


24. Can I buy e-books from Guilford outside the US?

Yes; Guilford e-books are available to purchase directly from our website for customers worldwide.


25. I'm still having problems and would like to contact somebody.
