The Cluttered Landscape of Advertising
The Cluttered Landscape of Advertising
Robert Goldman and Stephen Papson
In Sign Wars, authors Robert Goldman and Stephen Papson view contemporary ad culture as sign competitions among corporate symbols vying for attention-span and market share. They suggest that "sign wars" simultaneously express the economic logic of advertising as well as the contradictions that stem from trying to turn culture into a commodity. Sign wars are both a cause and a consequence of a media culture that appears dazed and confused--cynical, skeptical, and jaded, but striving for authenticity. Using numerous photos and examples from recent campaigns, the authors provide a critical review of the entire culture of advertising and show the profound influence ads have had on our society.
