This is the authoritative presentation of preventive cognitive therapy (PCT), a rigorously tested 8-week program shown to help individuals who have recovered from depression to stay well. PCT developer Claudi L. Bockting reviews the conceptual foundations, rationale, and evidence base for PCT and discusses how it compares to other depression relapse prevention strategies. She explains the ins and outs of PCT implementation with individuals or groups, providing step-by-step guidelines for conducting each session. Ways to overcome common treatment roadblocks and help clients get the most out of take-home assignments are described. In a convenient large-size format, the manual includes 39 reproducible and downloadable handouts and forms.

“A ‘must read’ for all trainees in clinical and counseling psychology, and the go-to resource for clinicians seeking to help patients with depression. This book not only makes a convincing case for focusing on relapse prevention, but also provides compelling data showing the effectiveness of PCT. It includes step-by-step guidance for how to structure therapy sessions, including materials to support client learning outside the therapy room. Written by a world-class leader in depression research and treatment, this book promises to become required reading for the next generation of therapists.”

—Jutta Joormann, PhD, Richard Ely Professor of Psychology, Yale University

“Depression is eminently treatable, but often comes back. PCT is a brief, eminently sensible approach to preventing symptom return that is grounded in theory and rigorously tested empirically. Bockting, a top international expert on the nature and treatment of depression, has produced a remarkably clear, step-by-step manual. Other treatment manuals exist, but none that so cogently addresses how to keep depression from returning once it has gone away. PCT is a most valuable addition to our clinical armamentarium.”

—Steven D. Hollon, PhD, Gertrude Conaway Vanderbilt Professor of Psychology, Vanderbilt University

“PCT reflects Bockting’s decades of research and her systematic and tireless efforts to improve the lives of those suffering from depression. Randomized controlled trials demonstrate the efficacy of PCT in reducing the risk of relapse and recurrence in those who have already experienced multiple episodes. The approach is presented in a clear and practical way, with interesting case material and useful handouts and worksheets. This is a ‘must-have’ book for clinicians treating depression, given the critical task of preventing the return of this debilitating and often recurrent disorder.”

—Adele M. Hayes, PhD, Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences, University of Delaware
