Patients with pathological narcissism present many challenges to psychotherapists. Integrating empirical research with clinical experience, this book describes treatment principles for promoting change with patients with pathological narcissism, addressing common challenges, and transforming obstacles into opportunities for growth. Written for therapists of all orientations, the book outlines strategies for addressing different presentations of pathological narcissism—grandiose and vulnerable, overt and covert—as well as ways to assess and intervene with co-occurring disorders, suicidality, or psychopathy. Numerous illustrative case vignettes bring readers into the immediacy of clinical work, from beginning to advanced stages of treatment. Providing a flexible intervention framework that tailors treatment to every patient, the book destigmatizes pathological narcissism and invites therapists and their patients to work together towards meaningful and lasting changes.

This title is part of the Psychoanalysis and Psychological Science Series, edited by Elliot Jurist.

“Well crafted and deeply informative, this book is a goldmine for all who work to understand and treat pathological narcissism. Weinberg integrates a comprehensive review of the empirical literature with a pragmatic, problem-oriented approach to clinical work. He seamlessly integrates best psychotherapy practices into his model. Weinberg’s conversational style and the clinical anecdotes peppered throughout make for an accessible guide that will be of great value to beginners and experienced clinicians alike.”

—Eve Caligor, MD, Department of Psychiatry, Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons

“This book represents an ideal integration of psychological science, clinical wisdom, and pedagogical utility. Weinberg combines an up-to-date, comprehensive synthesis of contemporary research with a deep understanding of available treatments for pathological narcissism, how these patients can change, and the complex challenges they bring to psychotherapy. He provides a principle-based, flexible guide to assessment and intervention that will be useful for practitioners, trainees, and supervisors of all theoretical orientations. Evocative clinical examples bring the reader right into the consulting room.”

—Aaron L. Pincus, PhD, Department of Psychology, Pennsylvania State University

“Weinberg draws on extensive research and his rich experience as a therapist in this well-written, clearly structured volume. A strength of this book is the focus on identifying principles of change in treatment of pathological narcissism. Weinberg emphasizes the importance of collaboratively developing treatment goals with patients and establishing a therapeutic working alliance, and explores issues of transference, countertransference, and other challenges in treating both grandiose and vulnerable narcissism. I recommend this fascinating work to all mental health professionals.”

—Konrad Michel, MD, Faculty of Medicine, University of Bern, Switzerland

“Readers will be indebted to Weinberg for his comprehensive review of the literature on narcissistic disorders and his useful guidance for clinicians of all backgrounds. Weinberg covers all the key topics related to work with this population in a clear, organized, and authoritative way. This book fills a gap—it will be a lifeline for psychiatrists, psychologists, and other therapists, who will benefit from Weinberg's data-informed, practical approach.”

—Richard G. Hersh, MD, Department of Psychiatry, Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons
