We strive to make all of our content as accessible and inclusive as possible for all of our users. This page describes current accessibility elements in our e-books and website. In addition, students with qualifying disabilities can find many Guilford books on Bookshare, with which Guilford has been a long-term partner. You can find more information and other resources on their general student resources page.

Read more about the Benetech Global Certified Accessible Program

We are pleased that Guilford’s workflow for accessible ePub e-books has been accredited as Global Certified Accessible (GCA) by Benetech, a nonprofit whose mission is to use technology to help people. GCA is the first-ever program to certify the accessibility of e-books.

This accreditation currently applies to the ePub format, which meets the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.0 AA. Not all of our ePub e-books have accessibility elements yet, but many recent titles do, and going forward, new ePub releases will be accessible. You can search below for accessible e-books, or look for the “Accessible” designation next to the e-book format on any product page.

Website

To ensure our website is accessible for all users, we target adherence to the standards set in the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 AA. Following are some of the criteria we employ to achieve an accessible browsing experience.

Summary for Users with Visual Impairments

  • All non-decorative images and links without discernible text include proper alternative text.
  • Site content should be compatible with screen readers, and has been tested with the NVDA screen reader.
  • Form fields have corresponding labels and/or aria-label attributes so that their purpose can be communicated via screen reader.
  • All content is contained within relevant landmark elements to improve screen reader compatibility.
  • Elements that have focus during keyboard navigation are outlined with clear focus indicators that should display consistently across different browsers
  • All pages have skip links at the top of the page so that users can jump past navigation elements to the main content of the page.
  • Most site content now complies with the WCAG AA color contrast ratio guidelines to help ensure that meaningful content can be distinguished from its background.
  • Links within copy across our site can be distinguished from surrounding text by both color and an underline that disappears on hover.

Summary for Keyboard-Only Users

  • All interactive site content that can be accessed via the mouse is accessible via keyboard.
  • The Tab key can be used to move focus across all interactive elements throughout each page in a logical order, and focused elements can be triggered using the Enter key and/or the Spacebar.
  • Any element that currently has keyboard focus is surrounded by a visible focus outline to help distinguish it from surrounding content.
  • Skip links are available on every page to avoid the need to tab through navigation menus.
  • Popups should be fully accessible with keyboard-only navigation and can easily be closed to return to main content.
  • Keyboard focus should automatically move into any modals or popups when they are opened so that content within the modal can be accessed via keyboard.
  • Natively focusable HTML elements are used for interactive elements whenever possible to ensure that these elements are appropriately included in the tab focus order and accessible for keyboard-only users.
  • Autocomplete attributes have been included in form fields where available to identify input purpose and help browsers suggest more relevant autofill content.

Tips for Navigation

  • Skip Links: Every page has a skip link that allows the user to quickly jump to the main content of the page. It is the first focusable element on the page, so it can be accessed by pressing the Tab key for the first time after loading the page. To move focus backwards to the first element, press the Shift and the Tab keys together until the skip link is reached. When the skip link is in focus, it appears in the upper left corner of the page with the text "SKIP TO CONTENT," and can be triggered either by pressing the Enter key or by clicking on the link.
  • Menus: Drop down menus can be accessed using the mouse to click on (or sometimes simply hover over) the trigger element, or using the keyboard by pressing the Enter key while focused on the trigger element. Keyboard focus should automatically move into the menu once it is open. Items within the menu can be reached by clicking on them, or by using the Tab key until the item has focus and then pressing the Enter key. The menu can be closed by moving focus out of the menu, either by clicking away or tabbing through all of the options.
  • Popups: Our popups can be accessed in the same ways as our drop down menus. Users can click on any interactive elements within the popup, or tab through them using the keyboard. Keyboard focus will stay within the popup as long as it is open, but should return to where it was before the popup was opened once it is closed. The popup can be closed by clicking the "X" in the upper right corner of the popup; clicking on something outside of the popup; moving keyboard focus to the "X" and pressing the Enter key; or simply by pressing the Esc key.
  • Browser and Device Support

This site is developed to be compatible with all commonly used browsers, such as Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Apple Safari, and Microsoft Edge.

This site is responsive, meaning that content reflows based on the screen size and orientation of the device that is being used. This helps ensure that our site content is displayed logically and legibly for all users, regardless of the device they are using.

We routinely test new and existing features across a variety of devices, browsers, and screen widths to help minimize variation in display and functionality.

    Continuous Improvement

In addition to maintaining existing accessibility features, we are committed to continually improving and prioritizing accessibility as new features and content are developed.

All recently produced and forthcoming multimedia resources on our website will include accessibility features, such as transcripts for video and audio files.

We review updates to accessibility standards and scan for any accessibility issues on a regular basis. If you experience any issues with accessing our site content, please let us know at webmaster@guilford.com.
