Manager of Pre-Production Development and Scheduling
Guilford Press has an immediate opening for a new Manager of Pre-Production Development and Scheduling. This position will ensure the publication of high-quality books and manuals through editorial workflows that emphasize streamlined manuscript development, and pre-transmittal and transmittal processes. The position will work with a wide variety of acquisitions editors and authors and will ensure quality, consistency, adherence to Guilford’s editorial standards and guidelines, and timeliness in meeting publication goals.
The position will directly manage the development of approximately 5 to 10 titles per year. The position will supervise pre-production development staff, as well as assign projects to freelance development editors, assessing and providing feedback on their work. The ability to oversee the establishment of best practices in the development and submission processes for manuscripts, while working collaboratively across editorial and production teams, will be a key component of the Manager of Pre-Production Development and Scheduling’s role.
The Manager of Pre-Production Development and Scheduling needs to be an outstanding communicator who can successfully collaborate with colleagues throughout Guilford and maintain high editorial and scholarship standards in accordance with Guilford’s mission and legacy.
Responsibilities
- Oversee editorial workflows and manage the establishment and implementation of best practices and processes to ensure quality, efficiency, and the elimination of roadblocks, while working collaboratively across editorial and production teams.
- Oversee master schedule of titles and pipeline reports to ensure accuracy, timeliness, and cross-functional communication.
- Ensure manuscript and author adherence to quality, consistency, and high editorial and scholarship standards in line with Guilford’s mission and legacy.
- Participate with acquisitions' leadership team in working collaboratively on strategic imperatives and provide guidance on processes to all acquisitions staff.
- Supervise pre-production development staff of four and prioritize direct reports’ work based on publication plan and goals.
- Ensure timeliness of manuscript transmittals to production, and oversee assignments, scheduling, and budgets for all projects.
- Assess and provide feedback on the work of freelance development editors.
- Work with production department on production of titles, guidelines, establishment of new workflows, and efficiency plans based on publishing priorities, while providing guidance and communicating workflows and plans internally with staff and with authors.
- Some travel to conferences, or events as representative of Guilford authors and titles, may be required.
Requirements
- A minimum of 5 years of editorial and development work, preferably in the subject areas in which Guilford publishes.
- Experience in assessing, establishing, and communicating editorial workflows to maximize efficiency and quality.
- Experience in supervising and developing staff.
- Knowledge of the subject areas in which Guilford publishes is preferred.
- Proven ability to determine quality of submitted materials.
- Experience developing and editing manuscripts with authors, with a proven ability to add significant value to text.
- Bachelor’s degree in relevant field required.
Work Arrangements
This position is based out of our New York City office (near Penn Station in midtown Manhattan). This is not a remote work opportunity. Being available for in-office work on an ongoing basis is a key component of this position.
Compensation
The pay range for this position is $80,000 to $90,000 annually, with a hiring salary dependent on skills and experience.
